Learning New Sewing Skills: How Curiosity Turns Into New Designs at Just So Designs
One of the things I love most about running Just So Designs is that it never stands still. Just when I feel comfortable with a technique, I’ll spot a detail, a finish, or a garment feature and think… I need to learn how to do that properly. And that curiosity is often where our newest designs begin.
Learning new sewing skills isn’t just about adding another trick to the toolbox. It’s about opening the door to entirely new possibilities, new shapes, new finishes, and new products that feel more refined, more playful, and more Just So.
From “I’ll avoid that” to “I can do that”
If you sew, you’ll know there are certain techniques that feel intimidating. Buttonholes are a classic example. For a long time, they sat firmly in the I’ll work around that category. Hand-sewn buttons? Fine. Snaps? Easy. But machine-stitched buttonholes felt like a big leap.
Learning how to create clean, reliable buttonholes and neatly machine-stitch buttons to match has completely changed what I can design. It means garments that are easier to wear, adjustable, and practical without losing that handmade charm. It also means pieces that can grow with a child, be worn in different ways, or feel more polished for special occasions.
Suddenly, ideas that used to stay in my sketchbook are now very much possible.
Why details matter so much
At Just So Designs, details are never an afterthought. A button isn’t just a button it’s part of the story of the garment. The same goes for ruffle collars, cuffs, and trims.
Learning to construct ruffle collars properly so they sit beautifully, don’t twist, and keep their shape has been a game changer. These soft, statement details add personality to even the simplest silhouettes. A plain dress becomes something special. A comfortable everyday outfit turns into a piece that feels heirloom-inspired.
New skills allow me to elevate designs while keeping them wearable, washable, and practical for real life.
How new skills lead to new products
Every time I learn something new, it feeds directly back into what I offer:
-
Button-front garments that are easy to put on and take off
-
Adjustable designs that last longer and grow with little ones
-
Machine-stitched buttons that are secure, durable, and neatly finished
-
Ruffle collars and statement details that add whimsy without fuss
These aren’t changes for the sake of it—they’re thoughtful upgrades that improve how the garments look, feel, and function.
Learning as a small business owner (with real life happening)
Learning new sewing techniques as a small business owner and a parent looks very different to learning in a classroom. It happens in snatched moments, during nap times, late evenings, and with a lot of trial and error.
Not every attempt is perfect. Some samples never see the light of day. But each one teaches me something, and that learning curve is part of what makes handmade clothing so special. You’re not buying something mass-produced, you’re buying into a process of growth, skill, and care.
What this means for Just So Designs customers
When you shop with Just So Designs, you’re supporting a business that’s constantly evolving. I invest time in learning new techniques so that I can offer:

As my skills grow, so does the range of what I can create and I can’t wait to keep bringing those new ideas to life.
